About
A small company that does the whole job
HJ Consult is HJC AS: a Norwegian technology company that builds AI solutions, custom software and cloud platforms, and runs them afterwards. Direct lines, honest estimates and code you own.
The story
We started by building things ourselves
HJ Consult grew out of products we built from scratch: a booking platform for saunas with payments, memberships and remote locks, and the control system that keeps the heaters warm. Systems that run every day for people who pay for them.
That shaped how we work. When you both build and run, you get careful about what you promise and thorough about what you deliver. You learn that monitoring is part of the product, that documentation is a gift to your future self, and that the best system is the one that can be changed.
Today we do the same for others: AI, software and cloud for businesses in Norway and the Nordics that want one team to take the whole job, from brief to operations.
What we believe
Four things we do not negotiate
- 01What we believe
Ship
A system in production beats a perfect system in a document. We deliver small pieces early and often, and let reality correct us.
- 02What we believe
Measure
Everything we build can be measured: performance, errors, cost and use. Numbers replace opinions, and they make it easier to say “that did not work”.
- 03What we believe
Speak plainly
No buzzwords, no estimates we do not believe in. We explain technology so you can make decisions without us in the room.
- 04What we believe
No lock-in
The code is yours, the repository is yours, and the runbook is written so someone else can take over. We want you to stay because it is smart, not because you have to.
What you’re wondering
Yes, we’re small, and that’s the point
- 01What you’re wondering
“Aren’t you too small?”
We are. No project manager relaying messages, no markup for an office you will never visit, and nobody new to your case in week three. The trade is that we don’t run ten projects at once, which is worth knowing before you ask.
- 02What you’re wondering
“What if you don’t have time?”
Then we say so straight away, and we say when we do. A no today costs you less than a yes that turns into waiting. If it’s urgent, we would rather propose a smaller first step than a date we don’t believe in.
- 03What you’re wondering
“Who answers when it breaks?”
The same person. We run what we build, so the failure in the middle of the night reaches whoever wrote the code, not a first line that has to pass it on. That is uncomfortable enough that we build things that don’t break.
- 04What you’re wondering
“What if we disagree with you?”
We say what we think is right, once, with our reasoning. Then we do what you decide. You carry the risk and the bill, so you are the one who decides.
How we don’t work
Every no here costs us something
Saying no is easy when it is free. Below is what we don’t do, and what each no takes off our own side of the table. We keep to them anyway, because the alternative moves the cost to you.
No AI because the budget says AI
A lot of what people want AI for is better solved by a form somebody tidies up, a field missing from the database, or a decision nobody has taken. We look for the boring answer first, and say so when we find it.
What it costs usThe most expensive line in a proposal. No keys we don’t need
Access covers what we are actually working on, with a name against it, and it goes back when the phase ends. A supplier still holding production access two years after handover is not a service. It is a hole.
What it costs usWeeks spent waiting for access instead of building. We don’t switch on what we can’t switch off
Anything that runs on its own (an agent, a nightly job, a payment integration) gets an off switch and a person who gets the alert. Without an off switch, automation is something that happens to you.
What it costs usExtra days before anything runs at all.We don’t take over a system we can’t read
Asked to run something somebody else built, we want to read it first: the repository, the runbook, the access and whatever does the alerting. If we can’t, we say no. Otherwise our answer to the first failure at three in the morning is a guess you are paying for.
What it costs usA support contract we can’t say yes to.
